Took some doing, but I finally made it work. Still needs prettying up, but it’s now functional.

I’m not whether I like the gate or brake lights more.

Nice. Does this use old station wagon hinges/latches or is it a kit?

Nice! Now if only my station wagon that actually came with that set up would work properly ....

No kit, just universal Autoloc bear claw latches, six cables, two bellcranks and some springs.

Oh, and a doorknob:

You can’t go wrong with ‘59 Cad tail lights.

Kinja'd!!!

I imagine it’s impossible to put weight on here without breaking it, though?

Really cool either way!

Does it still have the original handle as well, or is that smoothed over?

Without the pass side cable in ‘gate’ form I think you’re going to have a bad day should someone decide to sit or place anything with some weight on it on your tailgate. Especially on the passenger side. Tailgates have 2 cables for a reason.

I love the idea.

You got a point. I still have it, and can re-hang it so it clips on if needed.

Once I finalize the welds it should be strong enough, but the whole point is that I can now load heavy stuff right into the bed, bypassing the tailgate altogether.

How about a how-to picture?

Kinja'd!!!

The two middle cables go to the handle. The sprung cables go to the right-upper latch, since it has to release anytime the doorgate is open. Since that’s a sliding latch, it has to release first, which is where the springs come in. Once that latch is out of the way, the right lower or left upper can release, depending on which way you turn the handle. RL and LU latches have a bit of slack in their cables so they pop after the RU latch has released.

You’ll need about a week of free time, and a welder.
